Washington: United States President Barack Obama has said that Al Qaeda Chief Osama Bin Laden must have had “some sort of support network” in Pakistan, but he does not know whether it included government officials.
While giving an interview to CBS’ 60 Minutes programme Obama says, “We don’t know whether there might have been some people inside of (Pakistan’s) government, people outside of government, and that’s something that we have to investigate and, more importantly, the Pakistani government has to investigate.”
Some lawmakers have called for cut down aid to Pakistan in light of the fact that Bin Laden lived there for years in apparent security.
Others have warned that Pakistan’s government and its nuclear weapons could fall into the hands of Islamic fundamentals.
Obama said that “It is going to take some time for us to be able to exploit the intelligence that we were able to gather on site.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Washington, Husain Haqqani, said that his country does not “have a policy of protecting these people.”
“Were there cracks through which things fell through?” Haqqani said. “Absolutely, and we will investigate that and get to the bottom of that.”
