Washington: United States President Barack Obama did not see Al Qaeda Chief Osama bin Laden get shot but studies that he was killed after a team used the code “Geronimo,” signifying his capture, CIA Director Leon Panetta said Tuesday.
While giving an interview to Public Broadcast Service (PBS) Panetta said officials in the situation room “did not know exactly what was going on” late Sunday night for 20 to 25 minutes when the US special forces team entered Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistani.
“There were very tense situation,” Panetta said. “But finally, Adm [William] McRaven came back and said he had picked up the word ‘Geronimo.’”
Panetta also said the administration did not tell Pakistani officials about its plans to raid Bin Laden’s compound because of the possibility that they might warn him or his supporters about the mission.
