Gujranwala: Tension broke out in Gujranwala, a northwest city of Punjab province of Pakistan, over the incident of attempt to ablaze the pages of the Holy Quran by some elements. Protestors in fury ransacked a church as well as police headquarters as a result around 100 people were arrested.
The news surfaced the entire area like a jungle fire. The people in rage gathered outside the church as well as school run by the local priest and smashed up the both buildings.
People hurled stones on church and DIG’s Office, injuring some 18 people including four police personnel. Those police officials were wounded including SP Headquarters Mubashar, Constables Usman, Javed and Aftab. All the injured were shifted to the hospital.
Police fired tear gas shells and used heavy baton charge to disperse the angry mob due to which at least 40 persons were fainted. Police called more troops from surrounding districts to control the situation and arrested more than 100 people.
In the area of Khokhar trauma was created between the people belonged to two separate religions when some troublemakers allegedly distributed a pamphlet among the people almost two weeks ago carrying some hate material about blasphemy of Last Prophet (PBUH).
The people lodged an FIR at Police Station Jinnah Road under blasphemy law on which police arrested suspicious man and his son. Police after expanding the sphere of investigations took 22 Christian people including priest of local church for questioning on the issue.
Some unknown people again pasted some pamphlets on the walls of the area demanding release of arrested persons. These leaflets contained also a threat that in case of not releasing these people, mosques in the area would be damaged by the blasts. In the meantime some burnt pages of Holy Quran were also found from the graveyard of Khokhar area which added fuel to fire.
