London: Prince William and Kate Middleton formally tied the knot at Westminster Abbety, as they were pronounced man and wife here.
The couple spent a private moment together with their families, as they signed the marriage register. Some 1,900 guests watched the couple exchange their vows, with many millions watching at home. The service finished at 1215 BST and the couple reached Buckingham Palace after their wedding in the church. Thousands of people lined the procession route the couple took to Buckingham Palace after the wedding.
Meanwhile, Prince William was made Duke of Cambridge and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge after their wedding, Buckingham Palace said. He will also take the titles Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus. The prince was given the titles by the Queen to mark his marriage. Catherine will also become her royal highness. The title of duke is the highest rank in the peerage. The titles link the couple to England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The service has run smoothly so far but there was a tiny moment of drama as the prince struggled to place the wedding ring on Miss Middleton’s finger. Following a long tradition, the ring has been fashioned from Welsh gold given to Prince William by the Queen. After the couple said their vows, in which she did not promise to obey William, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Rowan Williams, declared: “I pronounce that they be man and wife together, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”
Miss Middleton, who managed to keep her wedding dress a secret, is wearing an ivory and lace gown by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. While the Prince of Wales did not take any additional titles when he married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, he was already Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland and Earl of Chester. The Dukedom of Cambridge was created in 1801 but became extinct on the death of the 2nd Duke of Cambridge in 1904.
