My son is three years old. I recently got him enrolled at a school, under pressure from my wife. She was under peer pressure. “Children of his age have been enrolled in schools already,” she used to say. I had to bow before her demand.
Today I came to know that his teachers are making him (and his classmates) learn English poems by heart. I am wondering since I heard this what they want to do with our children. My son doesn’t know English. He knows only Urdu. How can he understand a poem? When he can’t (other kids can’t, too), why the hell are they making them learn an English poem by heart?
They must first teach our children good English, which, I am sure, will take at least five years. Only then can they expect these children to enjoy an English poem.
I feel we are an idiot nation. We have been doing this to our children for a long long time. Why? Isn’t it a wastage of time and money to make our children say things which he can’t understand? His energies should be spent on learning something meaningful.
If we tell our children stories in Urdu, it will help them grow their vocabulary and expand their horizon. They will start knowing the world. They will start learning. English poems will do none of this. It is time we stopped this stupidity.
