Kandahar: Over 500 Taliban inmates escaped from a prison in Kandahar, south of Afghanistan early Monday, news agencies reported.
An international news agency quoted Kandahar jail chief Ghulam Dastgir Mayar as saying that some 476 inmates made their good escape form the Kandahar Jail early on Monday, adding that the prisoners escaped after digging a hole.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi while talking to media via telephone claimed that over 500 Taliban detainees had been able to escape. He reiterated that Taliban, after digging a 360-meter long tunnel, enabled 541 militants including 106 commanders to escape.
Kandahar has been a Taliban stronghold where the US and Nato troops have their second major base after Bagram, in Afghanistan.
