Washington: United States Congress Thursday passed a budget bill that would fund the federal government through the end of this fiscal year. However dozens of lawmakers voted against the budget proposal.
The bill reflected last week’s agreement to fund the federal government until September 30, when fiscal year 2011 ends.
The final vote in the House was 260-167, with 59 Republicans opposing the package — one House Speaker John Boehner had boasted as the best deal he
could get out of spending cut-averse Democrats. In the Senate, the final vote was 81-19, with 14 Republicans dissenting.
“Welcome to divided government,” said Boehner. “Is it perfect? No. I would be the first one to admit that it’s flawed.”
In total, the bill sets final 2011 spending levels at 1.049 trillion dollars. This is a 78.5 billion decrease from the US President Barack Obama’s 2011 budget request and a 39.9 billion decrease from the 1.089 trillion 2010 spending level.
After the House vote, members began consideration of two healthcare resolutions that would amend the spending bill to block federal funding for Planned Parenthood and defund last year’s healthcare law. House passage of these resolutions is not expected to matter, as they are not expected to be approved by the Senate.
Obama is expected to sign the bill on late Friday.
