The team announced for the limited overs game in West Indies gave us only one surprise–shock, in fact. Ahmed Shehzad, whose performances were a disservice to the team in all the world cup games that he played, has been retained.
Mohsin Hasan Khan, the chief selector, tried to justify his inclusion by citing his performace in New Zealand where he scored one century and a century in a warm up game ahead of the world cup. This is unacceptable.
There have been many players in our cricket history who were dropped after only one or two matches although they had a very good season to get themselves selected. Imran Abbas, a right handed batsman, was dropped after only two one-day games against Sri Lanka in early 2000, although he was among the top scorers of the season along with Younis Khan who made his debut in the same series. Javed Qadeer, a talented wicket keeper, was dropped after just one match in UAE in 1995.
Why then we have stuck with Ahmed Shehzad who failed to perform in five consecutive matches. Isn’t it double standards that some guys are dropped after just one or two matches while others are not dropped even after a series of bad performances?
Does anyone remember Asim Kamal, who scored eight half centuries in 12 test matches from 2003 to 2005 at an average of 37 and was still dropped?
Taufeeq Umar is another surprise inclusion. Look at his past records. He has scored at an average of 24 in his 19 one-day games. Yet he has made a comeback.
This is why Pakistan is failing at the top level. If justice is not done, Pakistan will continue to fail at the top.
