Srinagar: Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees chief Moulvi Showkat Ahmad Shah was killed and several people were injured in a blast out side a mosque in disputed Srinagar, Indian media reported on Friday.
Sources said that the moderate separatist cleric was seriously injured in the blast in Maisuma area of the capital. He was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Indian police said that an improvised explosive device (IED) blast was used in the incident.
Police claimed that militants planted an IED on a bicycle the rear entrance of the mosque where Shah used to lead the Friday prayers.
Shah was also actively involved in separatist politics and was very close to Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Mohammad Yasin Malik.
