New Dehli: Renowned Tibetans leader Dalai Lama has announced retirement as a political leader of Tibet.
Lama is the most important figure in Tibetan Buddhism, and is regarded by most Tibetans as a living reincarnation of Buddha.
He said he would give up his role as leader of the exiled Tibetan community, to be replaced by a democratically elected prime minister.
“My desire to devolve authority has nothing to do with a wish to shirk responsibility,” the Dalai told his followers. “It is to benefit Tibetans in the long run.”
The Dalai Lama fled China in 1959 after a Tibetan revolt against Chinese rule.
He took up residence in Dharamsala in India, now home to a 5,000-strong Tibetan community, as well as the government in exile.
The retirement is being widely viewed as an attempt to modernise, and perhaps to prepare for the 76-year-old’s death.
