To pay tribute to Facebook, the social networking site that played an important role in the revolution in Egypt, an Egyptian couple has named their baby girl “Facebook”.
According to reports, a twenty-something Egyptian man has named his first born daughter “Facebook” to pay tribute to the role the social media service played in organizing the protests in Tahrir Square and beyond. The girl’s family, friends, and neighbours in the Ibrahimya region gathered around her to express their ongoing support for the revolution that started on Facebook.
The social network played a crucial role in the Egyptian revolution — so much so that the January 25 uprising has widely been labeled “the Facebook Revolution”. Egyptians used the social network to organize protests, share information, and connect with the outside world.
There are five million Facebook users in Egypt, more than any other country in the Middle East and North Africa region. Facebook reported an increase in Egyptian users in the past month, with 32,000 Facebook groups and 14,000 pages created in the two weeks after January 25.
