Islamabad: Pakistan’s Foreign Office declared late Tuesday night that Raymond Davis is a diplomat and he was appointed in the United States Embassy in Islamabad, sources said.
According to Pakistani media sources, a letter in this regard has been issued to law ministry that Davis is a diplomat and was appointed as a diplomat in the US Embassy.
The sources said that it is mentioned in the letter that Davis has diplomatic immunity and under Vienna Convention notification of sender country is enough to consider any person diplomat.
However, sources in the law ministry has not confirmed any such letter regarding Davis immunity.
It is pertinent to mention here that United States President Barak Obama from Washington and Senator John Kerry in Lahore urged Pakistan to recognize Davis as a US diplomat under the Vienna Convention and release him immediately.
Political experts in Pakistan believed that there was a lot of pressure on Pakistani government to recognize Davis as a diplomat and release him under Vienna Convention. The US has also warned Pakistani indirectly that aid would be closed if Davis was not released.
The experts said that anti US sentiments are rising among the people and it may further increase if the government released Davis without legal formalities. They said a few leaders of Pakistan Peoples’ Party were trying to mislead the nation regarding Davis issue.
