Wednesday: A new cyclone has struck Australia, two weeks after another storm hit parts of Queensland.Cyclone Carlos knocked down trees and power lines and caused limited flooding as it hit Darwin, bringing winds of up to 80mph.
The city’s airport was closed, along with schools and government buildings, but evacuations were not needed. However, residents were warned to stay off the streets.
The centre of the storm passed within two miles of Darwin, the unofficial capital of Australia’s ‘Top End’, but stayed offshore. Carlos followed cyclone Yasi, a category 5 storm that officials said was Australia’s largest in a century, which hit north-eastern Queensland state on February 3.
