Mardan: At least 27 cadets were killed and another 40 injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Pakistan Army’s training center in northern town of Mardan on Thursday.
Sources said that the incident took place at ground of the Punjab Regiment Center when the soldiers were busy in their morning drill.
The dead and the injured were shifted to the the Combine Military Hospital (CMH), Mardan, where emergency was declared after the blast.
The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that a youth wearing school uniform entered the training ground and blew himself up, killing 27 recruits and injuring 40.
The sources feared more casualties as many of the injured are in critical condition.
Security forces cordoned-off the area and launched a search operation.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack at the Punjab Regiment Centre.
“Such cowardly attacks cannot affect the morale of the security agencies and the resolve of the nation to eradicate terrorism,” he said in a statement.
