When Ponting enters the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad on Feb 21 to lead his side against Zimbabwe, he will surpass McGrath’s record of highest number of matches in world cups. Both have 39 games at present. And McGrath has retired.
Closely following Ponting is Sachin with 36 games. Jayasuriya has played 38 matches, but since he has not been chosen by Sri Lankan selectors, he has no chance to improve his world cup records. His compatriot Murali will, however, build up on his 31-match world cup career. Kallis will also add to his 29 matches. And Chanderpaul will move up from 26 games.
