Combining your smoke break with a coffee break after a heavy day at work might be your perfect mantra for unwinding.
However a new research conducted at the Athens medical school, has indicated that the two stimuli, which are harmful in themselves, are even more harmful when taken together.
The research, which has been published in the journal of the American College of Cardiology, is based on previous studies which have shown that smoking and caffeine acted together to have a harmful effect on arteries and blood flow.
The researchers, who observed the long term as well as the short term effects of consuming the two together, however, were not able to zero in on the exact reasons behind the phenomenon.
After studying a number of people who were in the habit of lighting up with a coffee researchers found that the final impact of the two stimuli was larger than the sum of the separate impacts of the two stimuli alone.
They also said that other studies had shown smoking and caffeine combined together had an unfavourable effect on blood pressure and increased the risk of heart attacks.
“The underlying mechanism at the basic level responsible for the interactive effect of the two is unclear at this stage. Given the frequent combination of smoking and caffeine intake, these effects on arterial function may have important implications,” the researchers wrote in their study.
