ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, has said that women have to be economically empowered so that they could play their positive role in nation building.
He said recent government of Pakistan Peoples’ Party, according to the vision of late Benazir Bhutto, is committed to take all steps for the emancipation of women within religious, cultural and social parameters.
The Prime minister expressed these views while talking to Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, Minister for Women Development, who called on him at Prime Minister House on Saturday.
He expressed confidence that all the provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir will also take initiatives for women emancipation .He also hoped that the provincial governments will make arrangements to implement the  “Protection of women against sexual harassment at work place” act passed by the Parliament.
Gilani said the government is aware of social, economic and political challenges being faced by women. He assured the support of Federal government in expediting the pending legislation at provincial level for protection of women. He urged the Ministry of Population Welfare to utilize all the available resources to streamline energies of youth who constitute the major chunk of the population.
Dr. Firdous appreciated the PM’s vision for uplift of women, the poor and minorities. She apprised him of various programmes pertaining to women emancipation including transport facility for the working women and students from rural to urban centers. She also apprised him of ongoing schemes of the ministry of Population Welfare.
