SAO PAOLO: At least 267 people have been killed in recent flood in southern Brazil and a number of towns have been washed away in mudslides.
At least 157 people were killed in Teresopolis about 62 miles (about 100 km) north of Rio after hillsides and riverbanks let loose as much as a month’s rainfall in 24 hours, hurling water and mud into communities, officials said.
Also, at least 66 people were killed in two other towns in the region, the officials said.
The showers have also hit southeastern Brazil and claimed 44Â lives on Tuesday in Sao Paulo state, where flood also hampered the transportation system.
Meanwhile, in the Serrana region town of Nova Friburgo, three firemen were missing after being buried by a mudslide while they tried to rescue victims.
At least 100 people reported missing just in Teresopolis, the death toll was expected to increase.
Government officials said that rescues teams are trying to reach the most affected areas. The recent floods have left over 100,000 Brazilians displaced, they said.
Live in southern and several northern parts of have been paralysed and people are going through severe hardships.
