BRAZZAVILLE: The UN envoy dealing with sexual violence in conflict has called on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government to immediately investigate reports of rape on New Year’s Day in the country.
“I call upon the authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to investigate the allegations thoroughly and without delay,” Margot Wallstrom, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, said in his Monday’s statement.
Earlier on Friday, the humanitarian organization of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said that armed men raped over 30 women on New Year Day in an attack in the eastern town of Fizi, in the country’s South Kivu.
More than 15,000 rape cases were committed over the past year in the east of DRC, where peacekeepers cannot guarantee civilian security.
The UN peacekeeping force in DRC, known by its French acronym MONUSCO, has accused Rwandan and Congolese militias as well as the Congolese military of violence against civilians and gang-rape.
