Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi Acquitted from Two Vandalism Cases

Islamabad: A district and sessions court in the federal capital has acquitted Tehreek-e-Insaf’s founder Imran Khan and party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi from two cases of vandalism during the Long March.

Judicial Magistrate Ehtesham Alam approved the acquittal against the requests of Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

During the proceedings, PTI leaders Ali Muhammad Khan and Asad Umar appeared before the court, while others had submitted acquittal pleas. The court’s decision brought relief to the party leaders facing multiple charges.

The cases stemmed from incidents of vandalism and violation of Section 144 during PTI’s Azadi March, for which the Golra police station had booked several leaders of the former ruling party.

This development of acquittal from cases related to violation of Section 144 against PTI’s founders and other leaders emerged two weeks after similar acquittals were made in Kohsar and Karachi Company police stations.

Among the other party leaders acquitted on May 20 were Zartaj Gul, Ali Nawaz Awan, Faisal Javed, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Qasim Suri, Raja Khurram Nawaz, Shireen Mazari, Saifullah Nyazee, Asad Umar, and Awami Muslim League head Sheikh Rashid Ahmed.

On May 30, a district and sessions court in Islamabad also acquitted Imran Khan in two cases related to the May 9 incident.

The district and sessions courts stated in their verdict that “due to insufficient evidence presented by the prosecution, the founder of PTI has been acquitted.”

Cases were registered against the PTI founder for participating in the Long March and violating Section 144.

Imran Khan has been in Adiala Jail since August 2023, while many current and former politicians of his party have been facing various allegations of violence after their arrests on May 9.

The Islamabad High Court had also granted bail to him in the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) investigation reference worth £190 million on May 16, but he is still under arrest in other cases.
