KARACHI: Pakistan’s first fully automated dry bulk cargo terminal Fauji Akbar Portia (FAP) at Port Qasim, Karachi, set a record by discharging 16,500 metric tons of canola oilseeds in a day, which is better than the previous record of about 9,500 metric tons achieved at Karachi Port Trust.
A release on Thursday said MV Panagiotis D carrying about 55,000 tons of Canola docked at 11.5m draft purposed built jetty at FAP. Oilseed cargo was largest ever in one vessel to dock at any port in Pakistan. FAP terminal has ability to dock vessels with 14 meters of draft but current draft is restricted to 11.5m of draft by Port Qasim Authority.
This feat was made possible due to terminal being built on 9 hectare facility which is capable of catering to Panamax size vessels up to 80,000 DWT. Terminal can handle over 4 million metric tons of dry cargo and provides handling of import, export cargo complemented by bagging stations and storage facilities to exporters, importers at the port.
The FAP, inaugurated on October 26, 2010, is first state of art dry bulk cargo handling and storage terminal at Port Qasim. It is a joint venture between Fauji Foundation, Akbar Group and National Bank of Pakistan with Portia Management Services Limited (part of Peel Ports Group, UK) as O&M operator.
