Islamabad: Mumtaz Qadri, the alleged killer of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, was produced in Anti Terrorism Court (ATC), Rawalpindi here on Thursday.
Earlier, Chief Commissioner Islamabad through a notification transferred the ATC Rawalpindi to Sector G-7 in Islamabad for one day, as the accused could not be produced in ATC Rawalpindi due to security concerns.
The ATC judge, Malik Akram Awan did not turned up to Islamabad to conduct the trial. The lawyers including President District Bar Association, Rawalpidi Waheed Anjum opposed the transfer of ATC to Islamabad.
The judge declaring the Chief Commissioner’s notification as illegal ordered the police to produce the accused in ATC Rawalpindi, as lawyers also assured the court there would be no security issue.
On this, police took the accused from Islamabad to Rawalpindi and produced before the court.
On the occasion stringent security measures were taken by police and other law enforcement agencies to avert any untoward incident.
Hundreds of lawyers and other people present in the premises of the ATC Rawalpindi chanted full throated slogans in favour of Qadri and the Armoured Personal Carried (APC) vehicle carrying Qadri was showered with rose petals.
