ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has handed over the responsibility of electoral lists’ preparation work to the provincial governments of Pakistan on Sunday.
The highest electoral board of Pakistan, ECP, took nontraditional step in favour of local bodies’ election by handing over responsibility for preparing electoral lists to the governments of four provinces including Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
All four provincial governments will complete the electoral lists’ work under its management while ECP called the provincial chief secretaries in Islamabad on October 29.
ECP provided its stance that approximately 60 to 90 days are required to finalise the procedure of electoral lists, however, the responsibility has been shifted to the provincial government as per their announcements for local bodies’ election, sources said.
It should be mentioned that the Punjab and the Balochistan governments had announced the suggested date for holding the election on December 7 while Sindh government announced November 27.
ECP also tried shielding itself from any legal action by the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan via recent decision in case of irregularities in the lists if made by the provincial governments, legal experts’ said.
