Srinagar: An Indian border guard was killed and six Indian soldiers have gone missing after being hit by a snow avalanche in Indian administered Kashmir on Tuesday.
An Indian army official said a snow avalanche struck Furkian top in Kupwara in North Kashmir at around 0730 hours today. “Five army men and two men of border guards known as Border Security Force (BSF), who were stationed in the area, were swept away by the avalanche,” he said.
He said the avalanche struck when the joint team of Army and BSF were clearing snow between their camp and an outpost.
The official said rescue team from Army’s High Altitude Warfare School and local border guards are searching for the missing soldiers.
Kashmir especially the upper parts of North and South Kashmir have experienced heavy snowfall this winter, prompting authorities to regularly issue snow avalanche warning.
Kashmir’s Disaster Management cell has being regularly issuing avalanche warnings in the higher reaches of Kashmir after the recent heavy snowfall.
