Tehran: Iran says United States military expenses account for 40 percent of military expenditure in the world.
“In other words… it (US military expenses) is six times more than China’s military budget, four times that of Russia and 98 times more than Iran,” Tehran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi on Tuesday.
“US policy has always been based on war and warmongering, creating tension, sabotage, assassination and sowing discord,” IRIB quoted the minister as saying.
The US House of Representatives approved a US$649 billion military spending bill for the 2011 fiscal. The approved bill excludes funds for US nuclear programmes or military construction which will add another US$33 billion in later bills.
The US has increased its military spending by 81 percent since 2001, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
The US has reportedly spent over US$ one trillion in taxpayer money on its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001.
Vahidi went on to say that Iran’s defensive doctrine is, however, based on establishing security and expanding regional and international defensive cooperation.
The Iranian minister added that Iran pursues the doctrine of peace and security in the region, the most important principles of which are prevention of wars and defending vital resources.
