San Francisco: The popular social messaging platform WhatsApp has commenced development on what is being touted as one of its most favored features. This feature will allow users to share photos, videos, and other files with their friends without the need for an internet connection.
WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will enable Android users to share files, including photos, videos, and documents, with each other without needing an internet connection. Reports from WABetaInfo indicate that this feature will likely operate under the same technology used by Android users known as “Nearby Share.”
The feature employs Android’s system permissions to discover nearby devices using Bluetooth, facilitating local file sharing. This method ensures that all transferred files remain encrypted, enhancing security against potential data corruption by malicious entities. Users will have control over the permissions, with the ability to revoke access at any time.
In addition to Bluetooth access, WhatsApp will require permission to access system files and photo galleries, as well as location services to check if other devices are within connection range. Interestingly, the app will mask phone numbers during the transfer process to secure users’ privacy further.
This will make it extremely easy for users to share files with each other. Currently, this new file-sharing feature is available in a beta version for Android devices as it is still being tested. It is unclear when it will be made available to all users. This update is anticipated to significantly benefit users in areas with unreliable internet connectivity.
