BAGHDAD: At least 50 people, including 45 in Karbala, the central city of Iraq, were killed and scores of others injured as violence erupted across the country.
On Thursday, two back-to-back car bomb attacks respectively hit the north and south of the city, AFP reported. The explosions also injured at least 150 others.
The blasts occurred as the country has turned into a pilgrim destination due to the occasion of Arbaeen, which marks the 40th day to pass following the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA).
A similar blast took place in a town also located in central Iraq, killing one and inflicting wounds on three.
An explosive-laden vehicle was blown up in the eastern city of Diyala, killing two policemen and a female journalist and wounding 30 others, including a young child.
Tension in Iraq is continue some 10 years since the US-led invasion of the country and despite the presence of around 50,000 American troops on the country’s soil.
The California-based investigative organization Project Censored says over one million Iraqis have died during the US military presence.
