There are great opportunities in Pakistan particularly for a richer communications services such as 3G in the future therefore operators will have to meet a huge increase in bandwidth demand for customers.
This was stated by Saad Warriach, CEO Nokia Siemens Network in an exclusive interview to Telecom Recorder.
The shift from a mobile voice dominated business to a new era of data dominated services is affecting the operator’s business model and satisfying the increased bandwidth demand will only happen if the operator cost structure supports this new business model.
New services now and in the future require higher speeds at an affordable cost. At the same time, much of the telecommunications growth will occur in low Average Revenue per User markets where coverage is required in remote rural areas that lack basic infrastructure. Many new subscribers are first-time users of communications technology who need specific solutions to support their way of life and their ability to earn a living. Nokia Siemens Networks believes affordable connectivity is the solution.
Our infrastructure products include the full spectrum of radio, fixed line, convergence and transport technology, both for access and services core, plus complete network and service management solutions. Along with reliable deployment to ramp up infrastructure for business, the benefits will include multi-vendor capability for fast time-to-market and profit, user satisfaction management and more, he said.
Nokia Siemens Networks is and will remain one of the largest telecommunications infrastructure companies where by 2015; about 5 billion people will be connected by wire and wirelessly, from one end of the planet to the other.
At Nokia Siemens networks, we have developed one such solution that we think can make a difference. Our solution “Village Connection” has been designed to overcome the cost barriers that prevent mobile operators addressing the needs of such a huge constituency of users. Village Connection effectively brings down the cost of mobile communications for the operator making it affordable for mobile users with low spending power. Village Connection relies on a network solution that significantly lowers the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and reduces the operating expenditure (OPEX) associated with traditional wireless network roll-outs.
Pakistan is a big market out there for 3G because it has huge base of internet and cellular users base. The business case for cellular operator is definitely there. The issue of licensing fee is probably the main hurdle, which would eventually be sorted out. NSN has its test bed ready for 3G which would be inaugurated in a few weeks. It is a fully functional set up complete with Radio, core and IN.
Our focus is on increasing efficiency, reducing Opex and outsourcing because the operators cannot increase the price of connectivity owing to severe competition. But the cost of providing connectivity can be reduced. Our emphasis during the last year or so has been on increasing efficiency and reducing the Opex of operators. Similarly, about outsourcing, if we are handling 50 sites of one operator, we can handle 30 sites of the other. This gives us the economies of scale that individual operators cannot enjoy.
Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to the evolution of all mobile technologies and believes in evolving technologies such as 3G would support the economic growth of Pakistan and supports the new needs for data services.
He said that NSN provides network solutions in all the various wireless and mobile technologies and supports co-existence and migration in multi-technology environments. It has delivered WCDMA radio solutions to 130 operators, implemented more EDGE solutions than any other vendor with over 120 references, and enabled the launch of more than 100 HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) networks.
Pakistan is still experiencing a huge growth mode in the telecom segment while mobile business is growing, we also see growth coming into the fixed line business. The data-traffic will increase manifold in the next few years and this will propel growth for broadband in the country.
