ISLAMABAD: Despite the low number of literate population majority of Pakistanis prefer to read religious texts.
According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, of the 30% Pakistanis who say they read books, 36% prefer reading religious texts.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “Do you read books (other than school/college text books)?” The 30% Pakistanis who answered “yes” to this question were further asked “Normally what kind of books do you like to read?” Responding to this, 36% said religious books, 32% said informative books, 22% identified novels/digests and 10% said they read poetry. Respondents were further asked “Normally at what time do you prefer reading books?” Responding to this, 14% said they read books in the morning, 17% said in the afternoon, another 17% said at night before going to sleep and 50% said they read books whenever they found time. 2% chose not to respond.
A comparison of answers between males and females revealed that more females (41%) than males (34%) prefer reading religious books. Moreover, the figures show that likeness for religious books is higher in urban areas (45%) as compared to rural ones (32%).

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2640 men and women in urban and rural areas of all four provinces of the country, during July 08, 2013 – July 15, 2013. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
