“Political conversation is prohibited”
“Do not spoil the atmosphere and our business with political discussions”
“Kindly do not be political while having tea in our restaurant”
These are very common sentences which are sprayed on the walls of tea shops, dhabas and cafeterias, mostly in densely peopled areas.
Some restaurant owners also add quotes like “silence prevents bad deeds” and some other unauthentic quotes of religious personalities.
By doing this they have quietly and conveniently made us believe that politics is always dirty, politics results in clashes, blah blah blah. Because politics in Pakistan looks as if filthy rats are playing in a stinky junkyard, it has swallowed our real political values and culture taught by Quaid-e-Azam. This has made our youth stay away from politics. Our youngsters are looking for a leader, but they don’t know that they are leaders themselves.
The dirty politics in which all the political parties and civil and military establishment are involved has provided the reason for kicking out politics from our daily lives and debates in schools and colleges.
“Extraordinary” noble guardians who want their children to be nine-to-five hi-tech labourers compel them to stay away from student groups in colleges and universities to avoid political culture. These “innocent souls” do not know that politics is the only way to change this country, that politics is the only cure for this injured society which is licking the wounds of inflation, load shedding, terrorism, and suicides, that politics is the only key to unlock the hidden thunderbolts that reside in our youngsters.
Let’s not forget here the role of our religious parties (non-political) who shy away from doing anything to improve the conditions in the country. It’s like everyone wants to go to heaven but no one wants to die. They want change, too, but would make no effort. Such mentality has also banned discussion of the country’s situation in mosques and other public places.
It is time sentences like “Political conversation is banned” were banned. Let’s say yes to politics with politeness. Otherwise even after another 50 years we will be singing the song of revolution amid injustices and pythons like NRO will be dancing on the tomb of our unfulfilled desires.
