KARACHI: The British Government through its United Kingdom Agency for International Development (UKAID)- Department for International Development (DFID) program has collaborated with Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) to help about 400 bright Pakistani students, belonging to disadvantaged households in Pakistan, in attaining higher education with a combine cost of PKR 1 billion.
According to an agreement, signed on last week between the Lahore University of Managment Sciences (LUMS) and the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID); the two organizations will work together for the empowerment through education initiative.
The PKR 1 Billion LUMS-DFID programme aims to help alleviate poverty through quality education, allowing these young people to go on to earn more money through better jobs and so lift themselves and their families out of poverty. As part of the initiative, the UK Government and LUMS will work together to help nearly 400 of the brightest students from disadvantaged households in Pakistan attain quality higher education.
With a special focus on increasing access of higher education for girls the five-year programme will be managed by LUMS, who will identify and support students, otherwise unable to afford quality higher education, for undergraduate and graduate degrees. The programme will target impoverished regions of the country.
George Turkington, the head of DFID in Pakistan expressed that, entrenched poverty is denying opportunities to millions of people and undermining Pakistan’s long term stability and prosperity. This is an opportunity to help remove those financial barriers and allow more bright young minds to pursue their dreams and lift themselves out of poverty.
Emphasizing the significance of education in Pakistan, Turkington said that UK believes education is the key to transforming Pakistan’s future. That is why education is the UK’s top priority and why we will work to support some four million children in school in Pakistan by 2015. We look forward to working closely with LUMS over the coming years.
Tom Owen of DFID signed the agreement on behalf of DFID, his team members from DFID, LUMS Pro-Chancellor, Syed Babar Ali; LUMS Rector, Razzak Dawood; LUMS Vice Chancellor, Dr. Adil Najam and others were also present.
