America’s drone war against “terrorists” was started in 2004 by its intelligence agency CIA and then it was accelerated in 2007.
Pakistan has been the target of most of the drone attacks. According to watchdogs reports, there have been more than 360 drone attacks on Pakistan’s tribal areas.
The most important aspect about these drone attacks is that they have targeted leadership of militants when Pakistan’s authorities were holding negotiations in order to bring peace.
The attack in which Nek Mohammad was killed was the first of such attacks. He was killed after his talks with Corps Commander Peshawar had been successful.
Both previous governments — first of PML-Q under Pervez Musharraf and then that of PPP, MQM and ANP under Asif Zardari — used to condemn the drone attacks, but Wikileaks revealed that they had a tacit agreement in this regard with the American authorities.
The latest drone attack which killed Waliur Rehman, said to be the No 2 in Taliban hierarchy in the country, has come at a time when the newly elected leadership of the country at the centre and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was going to hold peace talks with the Taliban. This shows that the United States does not want the peace talks between the government and the Taliban and is trying to sabotage the process even before it begins.
Peace talks are a must for the people of Pakistan to know which militant organisations want terrorist activities in Pakistan to continue. The process will allow the country’s authorities to distinguish between its foes and friends.
It is now the responsibility of the new government to lodge strongest possible protest at world forums and order the armed forces to do what they can to stop these unlawful killings. It is not very difficult now since many parties in the opposition are also against these drone attacks.
