A group of United Nations observers also supervised the move, which came just one day after the government released 500 detainees, Press TV reported.
Releasing detainees is also a main demand by opposition and one of the key terms in the six-point peace plan brokered by UN- Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan.
Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest that has claimed the lives of many people, including large numbers of security forces.
