Las Vegas, Nevada: Google’s application for a licence to test its driverless cars has been approved by Nevada’s Department of Motor Vehicles after successful test drives in Carson City and on the Las Vegas strip.
The licence is first of its kind in the US. Google’s modified Toyota Prius was allowed to drive across the state under the following condition: Two people — one person, presumably with a license, to sit behind the wheel in case human intervention is required and a second to monitor for objects not in the vehicle’s direct path of travel.
Google’s self driving technology relies on a system of video cameras, radar sensors and lasers mounted all around the car, as well as a database of mapping information. So far, Google’s applied to license three test vehicles, the Digital Journal reported.
Legislation to regulate driverless cars is under way in the other states of the US, too.
Other US states are also planning to introduce legislation to regulate autonomous cars. California state Senator Alex Padilla, who introduced that state’s autonomous car legislation said: “The vast majority of vehicle accidents are due to human error.Through the use of computers, sensors and other systems, an autonomous vehicle is capable of analysing the driving environment more quickly and operating the vehicle more safely.”
