Kabul: At least 35 people including 19 militants were killed in gunfire and explosions that rocked the central diplomatic area of Kabul on Sunday, near a supermarket frequented by foreigners, sources said.
Local sources said that dozens of militants equipped with heavy weapons and rocket launchers entered into the area at around 1:30pm local time.
“Explosion and firing was heard near Zanbaq square near German embassy,” they added.
“The militants have also attacked Kabul Star hotel in Zanbaq Square and Parliament in Kart-e-Se. They have also takeover the buildings,” the sources said.
“Smoke seen rising from the German embassy,” Reuters reported. “Afghan MPs say some lawmakers have joined security forces repelling attackers from roof near Afghan parliament.”
A local man told this correspondent that dozens of explosions were heard in the area.
“There is an attack going on in Pul-e-charkhi, in the east of Kabul next to Kabul Military Training Center,”report said.
Security force choppers bombed the area of attack in Paktia province, but gun fires from attackers still continue.
Taliban claimed responsibility of the attacks in four provinces Kabul, Nangarhar, Paktia and Logar.
Isaf confirmed multiple attacks across Kabul, potentially 7 locations saying ANSF & Isaf responding as needed. “No reports of casulaties,” Isaf said.
Two suicide attacker blew themselves up near Jalalabad airport, provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulazai said.
Haqqani Network involved in Kabul attacks: Aghanistan
Kabul: Afghanistan Interior Ministry held Haqqani Network responsible of the recent attacks on embassies Sunday in the Afghan capital that leaved 16 people dead.
According to the Afghan Interior Ministry, intelligence sources revealed that the Haqqani Network of Pakistan was responsible for the disastrous attacks.
It was said in a statement that Haqqanis wanted to kill Afghan Vice President Karim Khalil. Two suicide bombers along with 12 other suspects were detained and the fighting came to a halt in Paktia and Nangarhar provinces.
At least 25 people were killed in the last such coordinated attack in Kabul on September 13 last year on US Embassy/NATO Headquarters premises.
