Karachi: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) announced on Tuesday a hike in electricity prices by Rs3.76 per unit as part of a quarterly fuel adjustment. This increase will impact electricity bills for three months: June, July, and August.
According to NEPRA’s notification, consumers will see their bills rise with additional charges of Rs1.90 per unit in June and Rs0.93 per unit in both July and August. This tariff hike will impose an extra financial burden of Rs 46.61 billion on electricity consumers nationwide, including those served by K-Electric.
On the other hand, according to sources the Pakistani government plans to introduce a relief package for small consumers using up to 200 units of electricity per month.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed that there should be no tariff increase for these protected consumers, rejecting his economic team’s proposal for a rate hike in this category.
