US Set to Lift Ban on Sale of Offensive Weapons to Saudi Arabia

Washington: In the coming days, the United States may lift the imposed restrictions on the sale of offensive military weapons to Saudi Arabia.

According to media reports, the White House has already signaled to Saudi Arabia that it is ready to lift the restrictions. This development marks a shift from the tougher stance adopted by President Biden upon taking office in 2021.

It should be noted that Saudi Arabia is the largest buyer of American weapons. The United States had frozen the sale of specific weapons when U.S. President Biden took office in 2021. Biden’s administration expressed concerns over Saudi Arabia’s military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen, citing civilian casualties, as well as Riyadh’s human rights record, particularly in the aftermath of the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently mentioned that the US and Saudi Arabia were on the brink of finalizing agreements on nuclear energy, security, and defense cooperation, as part of a broader normalization deal involving Riyadh and Israel.

It remains unclear when exactly the U.S. would lift the ban as no official statement has yet been issued by the White House and the official communication offices of Saudi Arabia regarding the possibility of ending restrictions on the sale of military weapons. However, some sources have indicated that it would materialize in the coming weeks.
