Islamabad: A woman driver, who sparked outrage after a video of her running over a Motorway Police officer at a toll plaza went viral, has been arrested in Rawalpindi, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The incident, which occurred on January 1, 2024, led to widespread calls for severe penalties against the driver identified as Farah.
The video that circulated on social media shows the woman arguing abusively with the officer after being stopped for speeding. She subsequently drove through a broken toll barrier, intentionally running over Officer Muhammad Sabir, who was attempting to stop her vehicle, resulting in his injury.
Following the public uproar and the viral nature of the incident, Rawalpindi police launched a swift operation to apprehend the offender. Farah was arrested by a special team led by the Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) under the directive of RPO Rawalpindi Babar Sarfraz Alpa.
Sources from Rawalpindi Police stated that the woman, identified as Farah, was traced and arrested in Islamabad, and the vehicle she was driving was seized. The sources mentioned that the woman had left the Islamabad Club when the police pursued her, eventually capturing her with the assistance of female officers and transferring her to the police station.
SSP Operations reported that the incident, which occurred on January 2, 2024, resulted in injuries to an officer named Sabir. Charges against the woman include obstruction of official duty, attempted murder, assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest. A strong case has been filed in court to ensure she faces due punishment.
He further stated that actions against those challenging the rule of law would continue without discrimination.
