Google Employees Protest Against Deal with Israel: 28 Employees Fired

New York: Google has terminated the employment of 28 workers who participated in protests against the company’s $1.2 billion contract with the Israeli government and military. The protests were staged by employees in response to Project Nimbus, a joint venture aimed at providing cloud and artificial intelligence services to Israeli authorities.

According to the details, Google had entered into a $1.2 billion deal with the multinational company Amazon to provide artificial intelligence and cloud services to the Israeli government. In response, Google employees protested at the company’s offices in New York City, Seattle, and California.

The employees also demanded the termination of the aforementioned deal with Israel. Google management has deemed the employees’ protest as obstruction to the work of other employees, against the company’s policies, and unacceptable behavior. It has been stated that after thorough investigations, 28 employees were fired.

The protests also highlighted broader labor concerns within Google, including issues related to health and safety, as well as allegations of discrimination against Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim employees.

The firings come after nine employees were arrested during sit-in protests held at Google’s offices in Seattle, New York, and Sunnyvale, California. Among the arrested individuals was one protester who occupied the office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian for over nine hours, demanding an end to the contract with Israel.

According to the group organizing the demonstrations, No Tech for Apartheid, the protests were peaceful and intended to raise concerns about the implications of the contract. However, Google cited violations of company policies and disruptions to work operations as reasons for the terminations.

According to the management, investigations into the employees’ protests will continue, and further necessary actions will be taken. It should be noted that last month, Google had fired a software engineer who shouted slogans in favor of Palestine during an Israeli tech event organized by the company in New York.
