Government Raises Electricity Price Just Before Eid

Islamabad: As the nation prepares for Eid celebrations, citizens are confronted with yet another blow as the government announces a surge in electricity tariffs. This comes just a day after a significant increase in petrol prices.

According to a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), the electricity tariff has been raised by Rs 2.75 per unit. The hike, effective immediately, applies to both residential and commercial consumers. The additional charges will reflect in the bills for the months of April, May, and June, impacting consumers during the summer months.

As a result of this new increase in electricity prices, consumers will bear an additional burden of Rs. 85.20 billion.

The increase in electricity prices is attributed to the rise in fuel costs and other factors, marking the second quarter adjustment in the current financial year. The upward revision in tariffs will also be applicable to consumers of K-Electric.

This move follows the recent hike in petrol prices, which saw a Rs 9.66 per litre increase for the next fortnight. The surge in petrol rates, reaching Rs 289.41 per litre, was justified by the finance ministry citing fluctuations in global oil markets.
