Death Sentences Handed to 8 Leaders of Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt

Cairo: An Egyptian court has sentenced 8 leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood to death.

According to sources, among those sentenced from the Muslim Brotherhood is 80-year-old Mohammed Badie, who has been in detention for a long time. Previously, the death sentence given to Mohammed Badie had been commuted to life imprisonment, but now he has been sentenced to death again.

Mohammed Badie, who served as the eighth Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood from 2010 to 2013, was arrested during the military-led uprising against the Brotherhood-backed government, leading to the presidency of Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

Also among those sentenced to death is Mahmoud Ezzat, Badie’s successor, who served as the Brotherhood’s acting general guide from 2013 until his arrest in 2020.

The remaining individuals sentenced to death were prominent members of the guidance bureau of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood. Notable figures include Mohamed El Beltagy, Osama Yassin, Safwat Hegazy, Amr Zaki, Essam Abdel Majed, and Muhamad Abdel Maqsoud.

Charges against the defendants included conspiring to topple President El Sisi’s government and inciting discord and national disunity through the sit-in.

The court sentenced the accused for participating in sit-ins and protests against the removal of former President Mohamed Morsi from power in 2013. The dispersal of the protest by the Egyptian military resulted in hundreds of casualties. The verdict also saw 37 defendants sentenced to life imprisonment and six to 15 years of hard labor.

While the accused have the right to appeal the ruling, many experts critical of Sisi say it would be of no use under the dictatorship of Sisi masked as a presidency based on the will of the people.  State security agencies under President El Sisi have intensified efforts against the group, leading to numerous arrests and sentences since 2013.

It should be noted that after the overthrow of President Morsi’s government by the military in Egypt, leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood have been facing trials and sentences from military courts. The organization was declared a terrorist group in Egypt in 2013. The Muslim Brotherhood was held responsible for the disturbances in the country by the Egyptian government.

Since the overthrow of President Morsi’s government, several leaders of Islamic organizations have been under a crackdown. In 2013, the Egyptian military seized power by overthrowing the country’s first elected President Mohamed Morsi, who had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Since then, multiple cases have been filed against several leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, and hundreds have been imprisoned and sentenced. Several Brotherhood leaders have been given death sentences, while the ousted President Mohamed Morsi died during his imprisonment.

It is noteworthy that in the recent elections held in Egpy, widely criticized as lacking legitimacy and termed a ‘sham’, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi claimed victory with an overwhelming 89.6% of the votes.
