Gaza: A new ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could begin on Monday and continue until the end of Ramadan, under which imprisoned Palestinians in Gaza will also be released.
Responding to a question about the ceasefire, Biden said he hoped that a ceasefire would be in place by next Monday, and “we’re close to a ceasefire.”
Later, he said that there is a proposal for a temporary ceasefire that will continue until the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims, which starts around March 10th or 11th according to the lunar calendar.
Biden said, “Ramazan’s coming up and there’s been an agreement by the Israelis that they would not engage in activities during Ramazan as well, in order to give us time to get all the hostages out,”
In a prolonged effort for a ceasefire, Egypt, Qatar, and the United States are presenting proposals to the involved parties, with discussions ongoing.
They have been trying to halt the fighting for six weeks and are pushing for the release of Israeli prisoners captured since Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7th.
According to media reports, the ceasefire agreement could also include the release of several hundred Palestinians detained by Israel.
