Bolivia and Colombia Back Brazil’s Comparison of Israeli Aggression to the Holocaust

London: Colombia and Bolivia have expressed solidarity with Brazil amidst a diplomatic row with Israel following Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s comments on the Gaza war, drawing parallels with the Holocaust. President Lula accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, prompting Israel’s condemnation and diplomatic tensions.

According to media reports, the President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, and Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed solidarity and support with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva who compared Israel’s actions in Gaza to Hitler’s actions against Jews during the Holocaust.

“In Gaza there is a genocide and thousands of children, women and elderly civilians are cowardly murdered,” Petro said on X. “Lula has only spoken the truth and the truth is defended or barbarism will annihilate us. The entire region must unite to immediately end the violence in Palestine.”

The President of Bolivia remarked that those who remain indifferent to the ongoing brutality in Gaza will not be forgiven by history.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro affirmed support for Lula’s stance, denouncing the violence in Gaza as genocide and urging regional unity to end the bloodshed. Meanwhile, Bolivian President Luis Arce echoed also Petro’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the truth about the situation in Palestine.

The dispute escalated when Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz labeled Lula’s remarks as “promiscuous” and declared him persona non grata in Israel. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira condemned Katz’s comments as outrageous and unacceptable, describing the incident as a shameful episode in Israel’s diplomatic history.

In response to Lula’s comments, Katz summoned Brazil’s ambassador for a meeting at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial center in Jerusalem. In a reciprocal move, Brazil summoned the Israeli ambassador and recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv for consultations.

Lula, a prominent voice for the Global South, has faced criticism and support for his remarks, which come ahead of Brazil’s hosting of a G20 foreign ministers’ meeting. Recently Lula has become increasingly critical of Israel’s aggression in Gaza which has resulted in the martyrdom of around 30,000 Palestinians and injured almost 70,000 others.
