Israel Not Serious About Reaching a Ceasefire Agreement, says Hamas

Beirut: Osama al-Hamdan, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, has stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is rejecting every ceasefire agreement in Gaza to gain time for personal political objectives.

Hamdan, during a press conference held at Hamas’ office in Beirut, Lebanon, issued messages regarding Israel’s rejection of the proposed agreement for ceasefire and prisoner exchange and the current situation in Gaza.

He stated that in the Gaza Strip, a comprehensive ceasefire and large-scale exchanges of prisoners were agreed upon in negotiations held in Paris, France, mediated by Qatar and Egypt. Israeli representatives had participated in these negotiations and had approved them. However, Israel later withdrew from the Paris Agreement and began to obstruct every path of negotiations so it could continue its attacks on the Palestinian people.

Hamdan also mentioned Israel’s response to the Paris Agreement and said, “Israel does not guarantee the free movement of Gaza’s people, the return of displaced people to their homes, and the complete withdrawal of occupying forces from Gaza. Moreover, Israel’s proposals regarding the exchange of prisoners do not show seriousness in reaching an agreement.”

Regarding Netanyahu’s war policy in Gaza, Osama al-Hamdan said, “Netanyahu’s behavior and stance confirm that he wants to obtain time for his political future plans. That is why he is prolonging the war and not inclined towards any negotiations.”

He stated that Hamas remains committed to its current position on the possibility of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange and is still desirous of an agreement that would bring an end to Israeli attacks on Palestinians.
