First U.S. Moon Landing Attempt in Over 50 Years Fails; Craft Crashes into the Ocean

Washington: The highly-anticipated first US mission to soft-land on the moon since Apollo 17, 1972, faced a devastating setback as the Peregrine lunar lander, developed by Astrobotic Technology in collaboration with NASA, burned up in Earth’s atmosphere after a propellant issue.

Last week, for the first time in over 50 years, the United States initiated a space mission aimed at landing on the moon. The attempt came to an unfortunate end as the Peregrine lunar lander, developed by Astrobotic Technology under NASA’s initiative, faced severe problems with its onboard propulsion systems after hours into its journey, leading to a fuel leak rendering it unable to land on the lunar surface and forcing it to abandon the moon landing plan.

The Pittsburgh-based company then directed the spacecraft to operate as a satellite, which failed leading to the spacecraft crashing in the South Pacific Ocean. Astrobotics confirmed the spacecraft’s failure and its losing contact with the spacecraft.

The objective of the Astrobotic mission was to deliver five instruments from NASA to the lunar surface, enabling the study of the local environment before the return of astronauts at the end of this decade. The Peregrine mission was a collaborative effort between Astrobotic and NASA, with the latter investing $108 million to support Astrobotic’s development and fly five payloads.
