Buses in Karachi to Run on Biogas Made from Dung Supplied from Bhains Colony

Karachi: In an effort to reduce air pollution and limit ground movement in the city, buses in Karachi will now run on biogas (bio-gas) from Buffalo Colony. Biogas is an alternative energy source derived from the dung of cows and buffaloes, making this Karachi’s first-ever biofuel transportation project.

According to details, a contract has been signed between representatives of Bhains Colony’s Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association and Karachi Transport Company for the supply of dung for the Red Line Biogas Bus Project for the buses to run on biogas. The agreement was signed by Shakir Umar Gujjar, President of the Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association Pakistan, and others.

Officials present at the ceremony included Shumaila Mohsin, General Manager of Operations of the transport company, Colonel Khalil Ahmed, Mubashir Qadeer, and others.

Under the agreement related to biogas, a tendering process will be conducted in Bhains Colony to select a company that will install the biogas plant and operate it. On the other hand, farmers will provide dung for this plant. For this purpose, the Bhains Colony Community Foundation will be established in action.

Under this agreement, Karachi Transport Company will play a role as the operator of the biogas plant and a bridge between the operator and the community foundation. A contract will be signed between the operator and the community foundation for the supply of dung. The funds generated from biogas will be spent according to the charter of the Bhains Colony Community Foundation.

Shaukat Umar Gujjar said that this project is a development initiative for Buffalo Colony’s farmers. It will not only reduce pollution but also make effective use of buffalo dung. The funds generated from this project will be spent on the welfare and development of Buffalo Colony and its farmers.

Environmental experts note that the project to “zero-emission” or eliminate harmful gases in Karachi has been initiated with financial assistance from the International Green Climate Fund. This is the first project approved by the Green Climate Fund after negotiations for the preservation of the environment by the United Nations.

In this project, two hundred buses will be fueled by bio-methane gas, derived from cow and buffalo dung present in Karachi and its surrounding areas, providing energy for the daily consumption of three thousand two hundred tons of dung. Otherwise, this dung is usually dumped into the sea. To wash away the pollution spread by dung, fifty thousand gallons of water are required, and this project will address this issue as well.

Bio-methane gas is participating in this project effectively and is registered with the Green Climate Fund, along with effective cooperation from federal and provincial governments, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and the French Development Agency.
