Dangers of High Blood Pressure Higher in Married Individuals, Research Finds

Washington: Medical experts have obtained results from a study indicating that married individuals are at a higher risk of high blood pressure compared to their unmarried counterparts.

Medical professionals often refer to high blood pressure as a silent killer because patients with high blood pressure often show no symptoms of the condition. Research results have revealed that married individuals may be more susceptible to high blood pressure.

According to a study conducted at Michigan University, the risks of having high blood pressure in married individuals are 9 percent higher than in unmarried individuals. Surprisingly, the study found that if one partner in a married couple is diagnosed with high blood pressure, the risks of the other partner (life partner) being affected by the same disease increase significantly.

The research included an assessment of blood pressure in 1,089 couples in Britain, 3,989 couples in the United States, 6,514 couples in China, and 22,389 couples in India. The data revealed that 47 percent of couples in Britain were affected by high blood pressure, while the percentages in the United States, China, and India were 38, 21, and 20 percent, respectively.

Researchers also evaluated the scenario when a woman marries a man with high blood pressure. The results showed that in such cases, the likelihood of diagnosing the disease in the wife also increases by up to 26 percent.

The researchers advise married couples to bring changes in their lifestyle, incorporating increased physical activity and making efforts to protect themselves from any form of stress. They also emphasize making healthy food choices to mitigate the risks associated with high blood pressure.
