Hindu-Muslim Clashes in Haryana, India: Five Dead, Mosque Burned

New Delhi: Religious clashes erupted in Haryana, India, following a Hindu nationalist procession, resulting in the burning of a mosque by the mob and the death of the Naib Imam of the Mosque.

During clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups near New Delhi in the Indian state of Haryana, five people, including the deputy imam of a mosque in Gurugram, were killed, more than 50 others were injured and carts and shops owned by Muslims were set ablaze.

The violence erupted when a Hindu nationalist religious procession led by a BJP officeholder passed through the Muslim-majority area of Nuh, located approximately 50 kilometers away from the capital city.

According to the BBC, the attack on the mosque took place when the police were deployed there but as per the statement of Nitish Agarwal, Deputy Police Commissioner of Gurugram “But we were outnumbered by the attackers who opened fire suddenly,”

Krishan Kumar, the spokesperson for the Nuh police, stated that the purpose of the procession was to travel from one temple to another, but confrontations occurred between the two groups along the route.

He further mentioned that two of the deceased were members of a Hindu group, while one was a Rapid Action Force personnel assisting the local police in maintaining order. Additionally, ten police officers were injured in the clash.

By Monday night, the violence had spread to neighboring villages, and near midnight, a mosque was set on fire, resulting in the death of one person and leaving another injured.
