Islamabad: Just a few hours after approving a significant increase in electricity rates, Nepra has dropped another bombshell on the public.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has once again raised the electricity prices by Rs. 1.81 per unit, burdening consumers with an additional cost of Rs. 24 billion.
As per the authorities, consumers will have to pay the increased charges in their August bills. This new hike in electricity prices has been made under the June monthly fuel adjustment.
It has been reported that cheaper electricity was generated from water and coal in June. China Power Sahiwal Coal Power Plant was operated at a reduced capacity. According to Nepra, more electricity was produced from lucrative Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and expensive French oil. In June, 10.3% more electricity was produced from lucrative LNG. Non-compliance with the merit order in June resulted in an extra burden of Rs. 957 million.
It is worth noting that just a day before, Nepra had already approved the government’s request for an increase of Rs. 7.50 per unit in electricity prices, which the Federal Government had ordered through a notification. As per the approval, there will be an increase of Rs. 3 to Rs. 7 per unit in the basic tariff of electricity.
