Recognizing Excellence: Abdullah Khan Honored with Order of Australia Medal

PERTH, Western Australia – Dr Hamza Amira, Chair of the Australian Islamic College (Perth) Inc is delighted to announce that Executive Principal and CEO of the College, Abdullah Khan, an accomplished educationist and respected community leader, has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). The Order of Australia Medal was awarded in recognition of Abdullah’s exceptional and long-standing services to education and multicultural communities in Western Australia. Dr Amira said, “The award is a fitting tribute to Abdullah’s unrelenting efforts to promote cultural understanding and social harmony in the State, particularly within the Islamic schooling sector”. Abdullah’s OAM was announced today in the King’s Birthday 2023 Honours List, as published on the Governor General’s website.

Abdullah has been actively involved in education for more than three decades having held various senior leadership positions in Islamic schools. He is a strong advocate for the rights of minority communities and over a decade has played a pivotal role in the development of the Islamic schooling sector in a voluntary capacity as Chair of the Islamic Schools Association of Australia. He has always worked closely with multicultural communities to promote diversity and inclusivity in a voluntary capacity including as a member of WA Ministerial Multicultural Advisory Council and Patron of Pakistan Association of Western Australia.

While Abdullah’s contribution to the community has been recognised before, this Order of Australia Award is the highest civilian honour he has ever received. In 2016, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) and in 2019 he received the Western Australian Multicultural Outstanding Individual Achievement Award.

“I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive such a prestigious award,” said Abdullah upon hearing the news. “For me, this is not just an individual award but also a recognition of the contributions made by multicultural communities in Western Australia and the vital role they play in enriching our society. I therefore would like to dedicate my award to all those who have supported me and worked with me over the years. I am grateful to you all for your unwavering support.”

The Australian Honours system celebrates outstanding achievements and contributions of extraordinary Australians from diverse fields and areas of endeavour and is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the community, society, or the nation. The investiture ceremony at which Abdullah will be presented with the insignia of the Award will be held at Government House in Perth later in 2023. The Board Chair on behalf of Australian Islamic College (Perth) Inc extends heartfelt congratulations to Abdullah on this well-deserved recognition of his exceptional and long-standing services to the community.
